Democrats midterm win could curb Trump tariffs on China, analysts say

·

Democratic control of the US Congress after this week midterms could limit President Donald Trump use of tariffs on Chinese goods in his final two years, analysts told Hong Kong Free Press.

A trade-war truce is due to expire in January, and Wu Xinbo of Fudan University said Democrats may leave Trump less able to leverage tariffs in talks with Beijing. Other analysts said a divided Washington could both constrain Trump maverick foreign policy and complicate coherent China strategy.

Hong Kong and mainland officials are watching how congressional oversight reshapes export controls, Taiwan policy and tariff negotiations after the Democratic sweep.
