Roughly 1,100 supporters of Alberta independence gathered outside the provincial legislature in Edmonton on Saturday for a final rally before Monday's referendum, according to an Alberta Sheriffs estimate reported by The Globe and Mail. The event was organised by Let Alberta Decide, and supporters travelled in on 11 buses from around the province.
Monday's vote, the first of its kind in Alberta, asks whether residents want to stay in Canada or hold a second, binding referendum on separation. More than a million people have already voted by post or at advance polls. Opinion polls put support for separation at between 20 and 30 per cent, and the separatists are not expected to win. Organiser Keith Wilson told the crowd the movement would endure whatever the result. Prime Minister Mark Carney campaigned in Calgary and Edmonton this week for a vote to remain.
