Amazon memo warns engineers against AI ‘tokenmaxxing’

·

Amazon has published internal guidance telling its software engineers to be more selective in how they use artificial intelligence tools and to avoid "tokenmaxxing", CNBC reports.

The memo, shared with staff in September and posted on the company's website on Tuesday, redefines the roles of software engineers and managers as AI becomes central to their work. Tokenmaxxing describes developers using AI as heavily as possible with little regard for the results, which drives up costs.

Amazon said measures such as token use, AI adoption rates and the number of code changes or reviews were deeply flawed ways to judge teams, and could add cost and complexity, though they could still be weighed with care alongside other data. A spokesperson said the company has not capped employees' token use. In May it shut an internal leaderboard after finding staff were tokenmaxxing to climb the rankings.
