Johannesburg water cuts spark wave of protests before municipal elections

·

Residents across Johannesburg are staging a string of protests over long water outages, days before municipal elections on 4 November, Daily Maverick reports.

Some households say they have gone more than a week without running water or a tanker delivery. At a home for disabled people in Dewetshof, staff said emergency reserves ran out in a morning during a five-day outage, leaving soiled bedding piling up until neighbours brought water.

Residents of Mayfair, Crosby and nearby areas, which rely on the troubled Commando supply system, protested outside Brixton police station on Saturday, and protesters blocked the N12 in Lenasia on Monday. Further demonstrations are planned in Melville, Kensington, Yeoville and Parktown West this week. The Water Crisis Committee wants emergency deliveries, repairs and clear timelines. The paper also reports people illegally opening fire hydrants, alongside failures in electricity and rubbish collection.
