Jesse Adams, the founder of a Vancouver Island dog rescue charity, has been killed by a drone attack in eastern Ukraine while evacuating animals, CTV News reports.
Adams set up the RainCoast Dog Rescue Society in 2014 and had returned to Ukraine this summer, having earlier helped move nine lions from an abandoned zoo in Odesa. He was working with the group Animal Rescue Kharkiv when its vehicle, just loaded with rescued animals, was hit by a drone near Kramatorsk on 25 October. The group said he was taken to hospital and had emergency surgery but could not be saved.
Days earlier he had posted about helping a family near Kramatorsk who would not leave until their animals could be moved with them. Animal welfare groups have paid tribute to his work. Global Affairs Canada had not commented, and Ottawa advises Canadians against all travel to Ukraine.
