The Dome in Anchorage, which has the biggest indoor field in Alaska and the state's sole full-size indoor running track, has raised about $4.64 million of the $6 million it needs to replace its fabric shell, the Anchorage Daily News reports. The inflatable facility opened in 2007 and its shell has a typical lifespan of 20 to 25 years.
Donations include $2 million from real estate investor Jonathan Rubini and his family's foundations and $1 million from the Rasmuson Foundation, while more than 200 smaller donors gave over $75,000 in the first month. Chief executive Curtis Penney said the project would go ahead in summer 2027, with construction starting in May, but warned that The Dome would close if the remaining money was not raised. It is used by schools, the University of Alaska Anchorage and many sports clubs.
