The Confederation of African Football has dropped its plan to switch the Africa Cup of Nations to a four-year cycle, Daily Maverick reports. CAF president Patrice Motsepe had announced in 2025 that the tournament would become quadrennial, with a new African Nations League filling the gaps from 2029, but the executive committee has now overturned that decision.
Motsepe said keeping a two-year Afcon served the interests of CAF's 54 member associations and of African players at foreign clubs. He said the proposed Nations League would have needed several years before it could generate the money African football needs to stay competitive and self-sustaining. The change means CAF must rethink its future schedule, although it insists the 2027 tournament, the first to be co-hosted by three countries, will go ahead on time despite reports of delays in preparations.
