Iran’s parliament speaker mocks Vance over midterm defeat post

·

Iran's parliament speaker, Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf, has ridiculed US Vice-President JD Vance over a social media post in which Vance said the war with Iran had cost Republicans the midterm elections, Politico Europe reports. Ghalibaf accused Vance of "losing gambler energy" and asked why he did not say the same to his boss.

In his post on X, published less than a day after the results, Vance listed ending the war, tackling the cost of living, putting America first and changing the relationship with Israel as steps the party needed to win back voters. Politico says it was his first attempt since the election to distance himself from the conflict, which President Donald Trump continues to defend. The US and Israel attacked Iran in February, and Iran's closure of the Strait of Hormuz pushed up fuel and fertiliser prices.
