Families displaced from eastern Khan Younis are bracing for another winter in flimsy tents on Gaza's shoreline, Al Jazeera reports. Many moved to the beach near al-Qarara port after overcrowded shelters and high land rents left them nowhere else to go, after their neighbourhoods fell within the area beyond which Israel does not allow Palestinians to go.
One father of six told the outlet that seawater and rain flooded his tent last winter while his children slept, leaving them seriously ill, and that he has been unable to find safer shelter all year. Another man sharing a tent with seven children said he could not provide winter clothes or a dry mattress. The report describes a local scheme that turns damaged cooking pots into barriers against the sea, which families say helps a little but is far from sufficient.
