Legal immigration from Canada to the United States has risen by 142% this year, even as numbers from almost every other region have fallen, according to White House figures highlighted by the civic group Build Canada, the National Post reports.
The data, posted by a White House account on X, shows falls ranging from 16% in Western Europe to 99% in Central Asia. Only Mexico, up 17%, and Canada bucked the trend.
Build Canada warned of a growing brain drain. Citing Statistics Canada, it said 120,640 people left Canada last year, the most since records began in 1952, and that tech workers typically earn 46% more in the US. Chief executive Lucy Hargreaves said losing highly educated Canadians was a serious problem, and the group has set out policy proposals it says could help.
