Panama's ambassador to India, Alonso Correa Miguel, has urged businesses in the Indian state of Tamil Nadu to use Panama as a base for reaching Latin American markets, The Hindu reports.
Speaking to maritime and pharmaceutical firms in Chennai on Friday, he highlighted the Panama Canal, the Colón Free Zone, the country's large ship registry and its dollar-based economy. He said Panama is home to five of Latin America's ten biggest ports, which offer direct cargo services to 152 ports in 54 countries.
The ambassador said firms operating from Panama's more than 23 free zones can benefit from tax incentives, and that its 23 trade agreements covering 59 countries allow duty-free access to many markets. In return, he said, Tamil Nadu could supply cargo, ships and skilled seafarers.
