A large chemical release at the MC Tank terminal in Toledo, Ohio, has forced people living or working within a mile of the site to evacuate, CBS News reports. Toledo Fire and Rescue issued the evacuation order late on Tuesday after a plume of smoke containing unidentified chemicals rose from the terminal on Progress Avenue.
Early on Wednesday, residents within three miles were told to shelter in place, keep doors and windows shut, switch off ventilation that draws in outside air and keep pets indoors. A local primary school is serving as a temporary shelter, and Red Cross and city buses have been stationed at a nearby supermarket car park.
No injuries have been reported. Toledo's public schools closed for the day.
