Young anglophones still leave Quebec, but the outflow has slowed sharply, study finds

·

Young English speakers are still more likely than French speakers to leave Quebec for other provinces, but the trend has slowed dramatically, according to research reported by The Globe and Mail via The Canadian Press.

The paper by Simon-Pierre Lacasse and Meghan Rulli, published by the Quebec English-Speaking Communities Research Network, found that nearly a fifth of the province's anglophones left between the late 1960s and early 1980s, with a net loss of about 121,000 between 1976 and 1981. From 2016 to 2021 the net loss was about 3,900.

More than 1.6 million Quebeckers regularly spoke English at home in 2021. Lacasse said young anglophones appear better integrated than in the 1970s, though career prospects and language politics, including the province's 2022 language law, still push some to leave.
