Early election results suggest Republicans are on course to lose seats in the Alaska House, strengthening the bipartisan majority coalition of Democrats, independents and moderate Republicans, the Anchorage Daily News reports. Republican candidates were trailing Democrats and independents in several races on Tuesday night.
House majority leader Chuck Kopp, an Anchorage Republican who ran unopposed, called the national swing to Democrats a listening moment for his party. In the Senate, no member of the 14-strong bipartisan majority was trailing a conservative challenger, and Democrat Bill Wielechowski said the chamber planned to form a coalition again before January's session. He described the results, alongside Democrat Jonathan Kreiss-Tomkins's early lead in the governor's race, as a rebuke of Governor Mike Dunleavy's years in office. Thousands of ballots remain to be counted, and ranked-choice tallies come later.
