A house in the Takaro area of Palmerston North was destroyed by fire on Tuesday evening, drawing a large crowd of onlookers, the NZ Herald reports.
Fire and Emergency New Zealand was called to the single-storey home on Kowhai Avenue at 6.19pm. A witness said flames rose higher than the surrounding trees and estimated that about 200 people had gathered in nearby streets to watch. Footage shared online showed thick black smoke over the street as firefighters worked from the road.
Another witness, who had been at a children's football match nearby, described the blaze as intense and said the smoke could be smelled and the flames seen above houses from the sports ground. The cause of the fire had not been reported.
