Prime Minister Christopher Luxon and Labour leader Chris Hipkins traded blows over the state of the health system in their latest election debate, the NZ Herald reports.
Pressed by moderator Patrick Gower on whether health was in crisis, Mr Luxon said it was incredibly challenging and that his government had inherited a crisis. Mr Hipkins accused him of being in denial and of attacking health workers. Mr Luxon said his goal was to end the treatment of emergency patients in hospital corridors.
It was the third debate between the pair in a fortnight. Two polls released on Tuesday gave different pictures: a 1News-Verian poll had National on 32% and Labour on 27%, while a Post/Freshwater Strategy poll put Labour narrowly ahead on 28.7% to National's 27.6%.
