The 30th Ibero-American Summit, which brings together Spanish- and Portuguese-speaking countries, began in Madrid on Wednesday, with Mexico and Spain using the opening day to stress how far their relationship has recovered, Mexico News Daily reports. Mexico's foreign minister, Roberto Velasco, who is standing in for President Claudia Sheinbaum, met his Spanish counterpart, José Manuel Albares, and afterwards described relations as excellent.
Both ministers praised the rapport between Sheinbaum and Spain's prime minister, Pedro Sánchez. Ties had soured under Sheinbaum's predecessor, Andrés Manuel López Obrador, who in 2019 demanded an apology from Spain for abuses during the conquest of Mexico, a request Madrid rejected. According to the outlet, relations improved after King Felipe VI acknowledged earlier this year that there had been significant abuses during the Spanish colonisation of the Americas. Spain is one of Mexico's leading sources of foreign investment.
