Kaczyński sparks row in Poland with remarks on possible EU exit talks

·

Jarosław Kaczyński, leader of Poland's main opposition party, Law and Justice (PiS), has caused controversy by appearing to suggest that Poland and like-minded EU members could begin the process of leaving the bloc if attempts to reform it fail, Notes from Poland reports.

Speaking at the Krynica Forum, Mr Kaczyński said there was a steady drive to turn the EU into a centralised state and called the European Parliament a "parody". He argued that elections within the next year in Poland, France and Spain could open a window for reform.

Prime Minister Donald Tusk and other members of the governing coalition condemned the remarks, repeating their long-standing charge that PiS wants a "Polexit". Mr Kaczyński accused Mr Tusk of twisting his words and said he wants to reform the EU, not leave it.
