Tonje Brenna, parliamentary leader of Norway's governing Labour Party, has accused the Progress Party of pursuing integration policies that would lead to the kind of unrest it warns against, Norwegian broadcaster NRK reports. Progress Party leader Sylvi Listhaug told NRK last week, while visiting Paris after days of rioting there, that Norway must guard against what she called French conditions through better integration and sustainable immigration.
Brenna pointed to past Progress Party proposals, including a three-week intensive Norwegian course, a shorter introduction programme for refugees and lower payments to participants, saying they would leave people with weaker language skills and poorer job prospects. Listhaug rejected the criticism, saying Labour had no business lecturing her party on immigration. Labour ministers have recently admitted the party underestimated how difficult integration is.
