Census survey shows nearly half of Juneau homes heat with fuel oil or kerosene

·

Almost half of households in Juneau heat their homes with fuel oil or kerosene, a much higher share than the national average, according to new US Census Bureau figures reported by the Juneau Empire. The American Community Survey, released on 29 October, measured wastewater systems, rooftop solar and electric vehicle ownership for the first time, and Juneau's population of more than 31,000 qualifies it for local estimates.

The city's utility runs about 7,150 sewer connections and spent more than $10 million on water and wastewater upgrades in the 2026 financial year, with $15 million more planned. A 5 per cent rate rise in July took the monthly residential water and sewer bill to $161.85, and flooding on the Mendenhall River has damaged parts of the system.
