Nigeria’s Senate rejects reviving failed Nigeria Air project but backs a national carrier

·

Nigeria's Senate has rejected a proposal to revive the contracts for the failed Nigeria Air national carrier, describing further debate on the project as a waste of time, Premium Times reports. Senate President Godswill Akpabio announced the decision on Tuesday during a debate on a motion calling for the air services agreement with China to be renegotiated so that Nigerian airlines can fly directly there.

Senators nevertheless said the country needed a national airline and urged the aviation ministry to explore setting one up. Nigeria Air was unveiled by the late President Muhammadu Buhari shortly before he left office in 2023, but became mired in allegations of fraud. The anti-corruption agency EFCC is prosecuting former aviation minister Hadi Sirika and members of his family on charges including alleged contract fraud. The Senate also backed the call for direct flights between Nigeria and China.
