The UN's maritime law tribunal in Hamburg will hold hearings on 10 and 11 November on Argentina's bid to halt Sea Lion, the British-licensed oilfield project to the north of the Falklands, MercoPress reports. The dates were set in an order dated 20 October by the tribunal's president, Judge Maurice Kamga, and the public sessions will be streamed online.
Argentina filed its request on 13 October, seeking four provisional measures including an order that Britain prevent oil production at Sea Lion and refrain from granting new permits, pending the formation of an arbitral tribunal under the UN Convention on the Law of the Sea. The UK has said it will take part, will resist any attempt to use the case to decide sovereignty, and will treat any measures as binding. Operators Navitas Petroleum and Rockhopper Exploration expect first oil in 2028.
