A National Guard member and a suspect were both shot in the leg late on Sunday near the US Capitol in Washington, DC, CBS News reports. Interim police chief Jeffrey Carroll said Guard members sitting in a van in the Capitol Hill area saw a fight break out shortly after 11pm. He said the suspect drew a gun, ignored orders to put it down and pointed it at the Guard members, who fired back.
Neither injury is thought to be life-threatening, and both are being treated in hospital. President Trump sent the National Guard into the capital more than a year ago as part of a crime crackdown. In November 2025 two Guard members were killed in an ambush near the White House.
