Nigeria's House of Representatives has called on the federal government to stop recent increases in fees and other compulsory charges at public universities, polytechnics and colleges of education, Premium Times reports.
The lawmaker who moved the motion, Mr Ehindero, said some institutions had raised fees by more than 100 per cent, which could undermine the Nigeria Education Loan Fund (NELFUND). He argued the loan scheme was built around existing tuition levels, so sudden rises threaten its sustainability and could shut out students from poorer families.
The House asked the education ministry and the National Universities Commission to work with institutions to suspend the increases and review fees in light of the economic pressures on households. It also told its education committees to investigate how widespread the rises are and whether they are justified.
