Joly calls in lawyers after Cleveland-Cliffs chief says he bought Stelco to stop competition

·

Canada's Industry Minister Mélanie Joly says she asked government lawyers to examine possible consequences for Cleveland-Cliffs after its chief executive said he bought the Hamilton steelmaker Stelco to stop it undercutting his US business, CBC News reports.

Lourenco Goncalves told CBC's Power & Politics on Tuesday evening that Stelco had been flooding the American market and undercutting his company's prices, and that this was why he acquired it.

Joly said on Wednesday that his remarks had led the government to contact its lawyers about what such "confessions" could mean. The comments add to pressure on the Ohio-based company, which has said it could sell the Hamilton plant next year. Joly had earlier demanded a plan to protect Stelco jobs before meeting Goncalves.
