Nigeria's disease control agency has said its weekly payment of ₦100,000 to people quarantined after possible exposure to Ebola was an unplanned, temporary step taken after some threatened to leave, Premium Times reports.
The Nigeria Centre for Disease Control and Prevention's director general, Jide Idris, told Channels Television on Monday that contacts had complained their absence was hurting their families and businesses. He said the agency was already paying for food and accommodation and stepped in because state governments, which are responsible for quarantine facilities, had not provided the support needed.
Idris said the number of traced contacts had risen to 54 after an Uber driver who took the patient to hospital was identified. Nigeria's only confirmed patient has been evacuated abroad, and the World Health Organization says monitoring continues.
