Janice Lukes, who is stepping down as councillor for Winnipeg's Waverley West ward after 12 years, says politics has become far more polarised and hostile since she was first elected, Global News reports.
She blamed economic instability, global conflict, mental health problems and the language of US President Donald Trump. Ms Lukes said most abuse came with chairing committees and taking big decisions, and that she hired private security for a community event last year after worrying comments online. She has also had police advice on what to do in an emergency at city hall.
Former mayor Susan Thompson said threats were not new, recalling a bomb threat and death threats in the 1990s before security improved. Last year, two Manitoba NDP ministers had their constituency offices set on fire.
Brandon University political scientist Kelly Saunders said women and politicians of colour face greater threats, deterring candidates.
