Police in Portugal broke up housing protest camps in Lisbon and Porto in the early hours of Sunday, arresting 31 people, The Guardian reports.
Officers, some with dogs, moved in shortly after 2am to remove more than 100 tents from Lisbon's Rossio Square, and cleared a smaller camp in Porto. Police said the action was proportionate, that protesters had first been asked to leave, and that 11 people were hurt, including three officers.
The campaign group Casa Para Viver disputed those figures, saying more than 20 people were injured and that rubber bullets were used, and called further protests for Wednesday. The camps, modelled on similar ones in Spain, began in early October in protest at soaring housing costs. Portuguese house prices have more than doubled since 2017.
