Residents across the Gaza Strip have repeatedly woken to a strong sewage-like smell in recent weeks, The National reports. People in Nuseirat camp in the centre and in displacement camps in the north described checking toilets and drains before learning that others across the territory had noticed the same odour.
Gaza's civil defence spokesman, Mahmoud Basal, said the agency believed Israeli forces were responsible and claimed aircraft had been used to spread the smell. He pointed to Israel's past use of a foul-smelling liquid known as Skunk to disperse protests. Israel's response was not included in the report.
A Health Ministry official, Ayman Al Ramlawi, said the substance could not be identified because Gaza lacks equipment to collect and test samples, and warned of possible risks to people with respiratory illnesses.
