Retired Nigerian SSS officer apologises to agency chief after torture claims

·

A retired officer of Nigeria's State Security Service, Nwaogu Ezeakolam, has apologised to the agency's director-general, Oluwatosin Ajayi, for making an internal dispute public, Premium Times reports.

In July, SaharaReporters quoted him as saying he had been detained for 21 days and tortured after a petition accused him of being a commander of the banned separatist group IPOB. He alleged that leaders of an association of retired officers had orchestrated the petition after he complained about the handling of its welfare funds.

In a letter dated 22 September, Ezeakolam called his decision to go public a serious error of judgement and asked for the matter to be settled internally. He has also threatened to sue SaharaReporters. Premium Times said the documents it saw did not show that he had been pressured into apologising.
