Residents demand answers as kerosene leak from GE Aerospace site pollutes River Taff

·

People living along the River Taff in south Wales are demanding answers after thousands of litres of kerosene leaked into the river from GE Aerospace's engine maintenance site at Nantgarw, Rhondda Cynon Taf, The Guardian reports.

The spill was spotted on Friday 16 October after residents reported strong chemical smells. Natural Resources Wales (NRW) says about 4km of river was affected and the pollution has now been stopped, but the paper found oily slicks still entering the water five days later. Early estimates put the spill at about 25,000 litres; NRW has not confirmed the amount.

Public Health Wales has told people to avoid contaminated stretches. Residents describe burning eyes and headaches, and a farm opposite the site cannot let animals drink from the river. A Cardiff University ecologist warned of harm to salmon, dippers and kingfishers. GE Aerospace said clean-up work was continuing.
