Amy Winehouse musical in development for London’s West End

·

A stage musical about Amy Winehouse is being developed for the West End, The Guardian reports, citing the trade paper Variety.

The project is at an early stage. The Tony-winning producer Catherine Schreiber, whose credits include Cabaret and Rent, is attached, casting is said to be under way, and the singer's father, Mitch Winehouse, is reported to be involved, which suggests the show will draw on her best-known songs. He has spoken for years about wanting a West End production that remembers her for more than her struggles with addiction.

The news comes in the week of the 20th anniversary of her album Back to Black, marked by a tribute concert at the Roundhouse in London. An expanded reissue of the album, with unreleased demos and a 2007 live recording, comes out on 23 October. Winehouse died in 2011, aged 27.
