A Russian father who took his young daughter from France to Russia without the mother's consent can keep her there, the country's Supreme Court has decided, Meduza reports, citing the newspaper Kommersant.
The mother, a Ukrainian citizen, moved to France with the child after Russia's full-scale invasion. The father later took the girl on what he said would be a short holiday abroad and instead brought her to Russia. A Novosibirsk court and higher courts ordered her return under the Hague Convention.
The Supreme Court overturned those rulings in July, saying the girl had settled in Russia, held Russian citizenship and that France was an "unfriendly" country and a member of NATO and the EU. The mother's appeal is now before the court's presidium. Her lawyer accused the court of putting politics above the law.
