A planned museum of communist crimes in Tallinn's former Patarei Prison has dropped around a third of its intended exhibition because of a shortage of money, Estonian public broadcaster ERR reports. The government agreed in 2018 to create the museum and research centre, which was meant to be the largest exhibition of its kind in the Baltic Sea region.
Martin Andreller, a board member of the Estonian Institute of Historical Memory, which is curating the project, said the audio guide and the entire Holocaust section were among the content removed to stay within the budget from the justice ministry. He said a further €500,000 would be needed to finish the exhibition as designed, excluding staff costs. A reduced version is due to be completed by mid-June, but it remains unclear whether next year's budget will cover the opening and running of the museum.
