Turkey launches COP31 pledge on using AI to tackle climate change

·

Turkey, which is hosting this year's COP31 United Nations climate summit, has launched a voluntary pledge promoting artificial intelligence as a tool against global warming, the Japan Times reports.

The Antalya AI Pledge will be presented at the summit in the coastal city later this month. It acknowledges that AI brings environmental risks, as energy-hungry data centres add to fossil fuel pollution, while arguing the technology can also help cut emissions. It is not yet clear which countries will sign it, and the US, the biggest builder of data centres, no longer takes part in the COP process.

Evan Tachovsky of the World Resources Institute said the pledge pointed in the right direction but lacked accountability measures to hold countries and tech companies to it.
