Singapore's foreign minister, Vivian Balakrishnan, has made an unannounced visit to Indonesia after several days of sharp exchanges between the neighbours over smoke haze from fires, the South China Morning Post reports.
Mr Balakrishnan met President Prabowo Subianto at his private home on Wednesday, a day after the two governments promised closer cooperation on cross-border haze. Earlier this week Singapore had summoned executives from ten companies linked to the fires.
Analysts quoted by the Post said the trip reflected Singapore's habit of handling its much larger neighbour through low-key diplomacy, at a time of increasingly nationalist language in Indonesia. They said the city state was also keen to limit any damage to relations as Jakarta faces local protests over the haze.
