A 43-year-old man has been charged over the alleged car attack on the independent MP Helen Haines outside her electorate office in Wangaratta, Victoria, The Guardian reports.
Victoria Police said Brendan Nugent, from Tarrawingee, faces charges of dangerous driving causing serious injury, intentionally causing serious injury, and the federal offence of harming a Commonwealth public official. Police will allege the attack was targeted. He was held overnight and is due before Wangaratta magistrates on Wednesday.
Ms Haines, the member for Indi, remains in a critical but stable condition at the Alfred hospital in Melbourne. She has lost one leg and surgeons were working to save the other. Police said a highway patrol officer reached the scene eight seconds after the emergency call, that a search warrant was carried out at the man's property, and that there were no other known threats.
