An Iranian official has said Tehran welcomes any effort towards negotiations, after Qatari mediators reportedly handed it a draft agreement aimed at ending the conflict with the US, The National reports.
The proposal, presented on Sunday according to an official cited by Reuters, sets out a seven-day sequence of confidence-building steps for both sides, with several countries acting as guarantors. Iran is expected to reply by the end of the week.
The comments follow a visit to Tehran by senior figures from Saudi Arabia, Pakistan and Turkey, led by Saudi Defence Minister Prince Khalid bin Salman. Sources told The National the meeting made little progress: the visitors asked Iran to rein in Houthi attacks on Saudi airports, while Iran asked them to press Washington to accept its offer of a two-week regional pause linked to gradually reopening the Strait of Hormuz.
