The Trump administration has granted exemptions from tariffs on a range of Canadian products, according to Republican Senator Susan Collins of Maine, Global News reports. The White House had not confirmed the move at the time of reporting.
Collins said the relief covered nine categories that Maine's blueberry, potato, apple and seaweed producers rely on, including cardboard and plastic packaging, refrigeration equipment, sorting and packing machinery, film and foil, and seaweed products for food. NBC News reported that some of the cancelled duties had been set at 50%.
Collins, who faces a difficult re-election contest in the 3 November midterms, said she had pressed trade officials including Jamieson Greer and Howard Lutnick for relief, and would keep pushing for a broader trade agreement with Canada. It was unclear how long the exemptions would last or whether other tariffs would be affected.
