Flying instructor, 80, named as victim of Loch Lomond light aircraft crash

·

An 80-year-old man killed when a light aircraft came down near Loch Lomond on Friday is understood to be flying instructor Ian Haggis, BBC News reports. A 16-year-old boy also died in the crash; his name has not been made public.

The Piper Tomahawk II took off from Glasgow Airport at 16:17 and its signal was lost about 20 minutes later, a few miles north-east of Drymen. Emergency crews were called to marshland at the site at around 16:45, and both people were pronounced dead there. The aircraft is registered to a Renfrew flight school, Leading Edge Flight Training. The Air Accidents Investigation Branch is investigating, with temporary airspace restrictions in force and a nearby road still closed. Former students have paid tribute online, and Glasgow Airport has offered its sympathy to the families.
