A man has died after fire spread through two houses and several vehicles in Richmond Hill, north of Toronto, early on Wednesday, Global News reports.
York Regional Police said the blaze broke out at about 3am on Crosby Avenue. Fire crews described a chaotic scene, with three cars burning between the two homes and some of the vehicles blocking access to the entrances. The man was pulled from a basement window and taken to hospital, where he was pronounced dead. Other residents escaped on their own.
Fire Chief Tom Raeburn said the cause was not yet known and it was too early to say whether the fire was suspicious. The Office of the Fire Marshal is investigating. The town's mayor, David West, called it a heartbreaking morning for the community.
