Von der Leyen’s centrist allies clash over AI liability rules in European Parliament

·

Parties in Ursula von der Leyen's centrist majority have clashed in the European Parliament over whether AI companies should be made legally liable for harm caused by their models, Politico Europe reports.

Socialist and Green MEPs urged the Commission to propose a new AI liability law, after it withdrew a draft directive last year as part of its push to simplify EU rules. Maltese Socialist Alex Agius Saliba called the withdrawal a big mistake, while Dutch Green Kim van Sparrentak said AI makers should be treated like the manufacturers of other faulty products.

Centre-right Swedish MEP Arba Kokalari argued the existing AI Act was enough and that Europe should concentrate on investment and competitiveness. Commissioner Jozef Síkela said the earlier proposal was dropped because member states and MEPs could not agree on it.
