Americans flying over the holidays face the highest fares in years as airlines pass on soaring jet fuel costs, NPR reports.
The average price of jet fuel in the US rose above $4.75 a gallon this week, according to the tracking firm Argus, close to an all-time high and almost double the level a year ago.
Hayley Berg, lead economist at the travel company Hopper, said fares were at a 10-year high. She said Thanksgiving tickets were about 30% dearer than last year and Christmas fares more than 20% higher.
Berg said travellers appear willing to pay for major holiday trips, which tend to be the hardest to give up. US airlines say demand has held steady despite the higher prices, although some passengers told NPR they were reconsidering plans.
