Met Police refers itself to watchdog over 2019 letter containing Thomas Markle allegations

·

The Metropolitan Police has asked the police watchdog, the IOPC, to examine how it dealt with a 2019 letter containing allegations about Thomas Markle Sr, the Duchess of Sussex's father, GB News reports.

The letter, sent to the force's Fixated Threats Assessment Centre in January 2019, was presented as a security concern but contained claims of offending outside the UK. Instead of passing these to overseas police, the Met gave the letter to the Duke and Duchess of Sussex's office. The nature of the claims and the identity of the writer have not been disclosed.

Commander Adam Slonecki said a recent internal review had led to the referral, and that the Met would now pass the allegations to the relevant foreign agencies. Mr Markle, 82, has strongly denied the claims, calling them lies.
