Rangiora car fire among seven suspected fireworks blazes as Guy Fawkes nears

·

A car caught fire on High Street in Rangiora on Tuesday night after a firework was reportedly thrown through its window, the NZ Herald reports. Police were alerted at about 9.05pm and said their inquiries were continuing.

Fire and Emergency New Zealand said the incident was one of seven fires this week thought to have been started by fireworks. Vegetation fires broke out in Papatoetoe, Kawerau and Fernside on Monday, and in Rangitaiki, Ferrymead and Seddon on Tuesday. Tom Ronaldson of the fire service said there had been fewer such fires than in some earlier years, but every one was preventable and their number had risen over the past two years. With Guy Fawkes celebrations approaching, he urged people to check local fire restrictions first and take responsibility for lighting fireworks safely.
