Alaska's Ballot Measure 2, which would scrap the state's ranked choice voting and open primaries, was on track to narrowly fail in early results on Tuesday night, the Anchorage Daily News reports. With 279 of 402 precincts reporting, 51.4% of votes were against the measure, which would also have repealed some campaign finance disclosure rules and restored partisan primaries.
Alaska adopted its current system by ballot measure in 2020, and a previous repeal attempt narrowly failed in 2024. The state Republican Party and President Donald Trump had criticised the system as confusing, while supporters including the Alaska Federation of Natives and labour groups said it favours moderates and bipartisanship. The No on 2 campaign raised more than $10.4 million, over four times the backers' $2.5 million, with both sides funded mainly by billionaires from outside the state.
