Democrat Jonathan Kreiss-Tomkins is leading the race to become Alaska's next governor, with 48.9% of first-choice votes as counting continued on Tuesday night, the Anchorage Daily News reports. With 279 of 402 precincts in, Republican businesswoman Bernadette Wilson had 29.5%, former Anchorage mayor Dave Bronson 14.1% and former attorney general Treg Taylor 7.3%.
If he holds on, the former Sitka lawmaker would be the state's first Democratic governor since 2002, succeeding term-limited Republican Mike Dunleavy. Should no candidate pass 50%, ranked choice tabulation would decide the result, and Wilson could still win if enough Bronson and Taylor voters ranked her second. Officials will count ballots until 18 November and aim to certify results on 25 November. Kreiss-Tomkins told reporters he expected to win a majority of first-place votes.
