The town hall in Limoges, a 143-year-old landmark in central France, has been badly damaged by fire after a group set it alight during unrest that followed nationwide protests over the cost of living, Euronews reports.
The local prefect, Maurice Barate, said the roof had fallen in on the floors below across most of the building, with only the west wing spared, and that about two-thirds of the outer structure had been lost.
The blaze came as Saturday's demonstrations descended into violence in several French cities. Officials said they were still assessing the full extent of the damage to the building.
