César Jáuregui, the former attorney general of the Mexican state of Chihuahua, has been taken into federal custody on a treason charge, Mexico News Daily reports.
Federal prosecutors accuse him of allowing CIA officers to take part in an April raid on a drug laboratory without the Mexican government's knowledge or permission. Two CIA officers and two Chihuahua officials, including the head of the state investigation agency, died in a car crash after the operation in Morelos municipality.
Jáuregui, who resigned in April, was detained on Sunday night after a state judge ruled he need not be held on separate state charges of unlawful exercise of public office and conspiracy. He was moved to the Altiplano federal prison on Monday and faces five to 40 years in jail if convicted. President Claudia Sheinbaum has blamed Chihuahua's authorities and accused Washington of interference.
