Argentine President Javier Milei told an oil and gas expo in Neuquén that the country is going through an "underground revolution" driven by the Vaca Muerta shale formation, the Buenos Aires Times reports.
Opening Argentina Oil & Gas Patagonia 2026 on Monday, Milei said the country was nearing production of one million barrels of oil a day and had just set a monthly export record of more than $10 billion. He credited his government's changes to economic rules and said Argentina would eventually become "a paradise".
Milei argued that a country's wealth depends more on its institutions than on its natural resources. He criticised past price controls, export restrictions, currency controls and energy subsidies for holding back investment. Neuquén province alone now produces more than 600,000 barrels a day. He was joined by Karina Milei and Governor Rolando Figueroa.
